Beer Industry Veteran Promoted to Vice President of Operations

March 2, 2015

WASHINGTON, DC – Beer Institute president and CEO Jim McGreevy is pleased to announce the promotion of Susan Haney to Vice President, Operations for the trade association that represents America’s brewers, beer importers and industry suppliers.

Haney has worked for the Institute for more than 13 years, when she started as the executive assistant to late president Jeff Becker. In her new position, Haney will oversee organizational operations, industry affairs and government affairs.

“Susan is an invaluable member of my team and has proven herself time and again to be a leader on many fronts,” said McGreevy. “She will continue to add value for our membership in this new role and use her vast knowledge of the industry to advocate for brewers and beer importers.”

Before joining the Beer Institute in 2001, Haney worked for Security Mutual Life, a leading life insurance company based in Binghamton, New York.

According to an economic study jointly commissioned by the Beer Institute and the National Beer Wholesalers Association in 2012, U.S. brewers and beer importers are the foundation for an industry that puts more than 2 million Americans to work, directly and indirectly. Beer also contributed $246.5 billion to America’s economy and generated $49 billion in local, state and federal taxes.

However, on average, more than 40 percent of what consumers pay for a beer goes to taxes. Currently pending in Congress, the bi-partisan Fair Brewers Excise and Economic Relief (Fair BEER) Act offers across the board reform of the federal beer tax, replacing it with a graduated structure that levels the playing field to the benefit of every brewer, importer and beer drinker in America. The legislation is designed to serve all beer drinkers, no matter what brand or style they choose.
