Beer Institute: One Year After Tariffs, Brewers Are Overpaying for Cansheet

WASHINGTON, D.C. – One year since the 232 tariffs on aluminum took effect, the Beer Institute retained Harbor Aluminum to estimate and detail the impact the tariffs on aluminum cansheet are having on the U.S. beverage industry, including brewers. Research done by Harbor Aluminum, an independent authority on the aluminum industry and its markets, found that while the U.S. beverage industry paid an equivalent to $250 million in Section 232 tariffs  for aluminum cansheet during March to December 2018, the U.S.

Beer Institute, American Beverage Association, Brewers Association and Can Manufacturers Institute Praise Re-Introduction of Aluminum Pricing Examination Act

Washington, D.C. – Trade associations representing American’s beer and beverage industries today praised Representatives Al Lawson (D-FL) and Ken Buck (R-CO) for reintroducing the Aluminum Pricing Examination (APEX) Act (H.R.1406), bipartisan legislation that would enhance the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) and Department of Justice’s (DOJ) authorities over aluminum price benchmarking entities, including those that publish the Midwest Premium. Created by metal producers years ago, the intent of the Midwest Premium was to reflect the cost of attracting aluminum into North America.

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, the Beer Institute published an unofficial estimate of domestic tax paid shipments by beer brewers for January 2019: The January 2019 estimate is 12,310,000 barrels, an increase of 1.2% vs. January 2018 removals of 12,167,000. Please note that the estimates reflect revised estimates released by the Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau (TTB) prior to the shutdown.

Reps. Ron Kind and Mike Kelly Introduce Bill to Grow Craft Breweries and Create Jobs

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, U.S. Reps. Ron Kind (D-WI) and Mike Kelly (R-PA) introduced the bipartisan Craft Beverage Modernization and Tax Reform Act (H.R. 1175), which will grow America’s craft beverage industry by reducing the tax burden and restrictive regulations for brewers, cider-makers, distillers, and vintners. “In Wisconsin, our craft brewers produce over one million barrels of beer a year. Not only are our breweries a source of pride and a large part of our state’s culture, but they also support our local economy and create jobs.

Senators Wyden and Blunt Reintroduce Craft Beverage Modernization and Tax Reform Act

Washington, D.C. • The Craft Beverage Modernization and Tax Reform Act (CBMTRA) was reintroduced in the U.S. Senate today with strong support from a broad group of industry trade associations including the beer, wine, spirits, and cider sectors. The legislation, which was first introduced in 2015 to recalibrate federal excise taxes and streamline regulations on alcohol beverage producers, was reintroduced in 2017 by Senators Ron Wyden (D-OR) and Roy Blunt (R-MO), garnering strong support from the majority of Congress as well as industry groups.

Washington, D.C. — The Beer Institute today released the results of its latest survey, finding 76 percent of Americans celebrating the Super Bowl this year plan to drink beer as part of their festivities. Additionally, the poll found 78 percent of those planning to enjoy beer while taking part in Super Bowl activities said it was an important part of the experience, with half of those respondents saying beer was very important to their Super Bowl celebration.
